Yamamoto® Research’s Setria® GLR Orosoluble Sticks is a dietary supplement in orosoluble stick form that provides 250 mg per daily dose of Setria® Reduced L-Glutathione. Glutathione is a potent antioxidant molecule that plays a key role in protecting the body against oxidative stress and the action of free radicals and is able to protect the hepatocytes against toxic molecules that can cause liver damage. The formulation in a handy orosoluble sticks ensures rapid dissolution and sublingual absorption, enabling the body to quickly and optimally absorb Glutathione from the sublingual venous circulation tributary to the superior vena cava, thus bypassing intestinal gamma-glutamyltransferase activity and avoiding the metabolic avidity of the enterocytes. It therefore escapes the *hepatic filter** and avoids the first-pass metabolism that usually takes place in the liver and deactivates a significant part of the glutathione molecule, thus making it less functional and effective.

One of our first lines of defence is Glutathione, a ubiquitous molecule, i.e. one that is present throughout our body, but that is particularly concentrated in the liver, where it protects liver cells from toxic molecules: in this case, Glutathione “binds” to and neutralises toxic metabolites. Reduced glutathione is in fact able to surrender its hydrogen (H+), which acts as an acceptor of electrons (e-) from reactive oxygen molecules, i.e. free radicals. At this point, having eliminated the danger caused by free radicals, glutathione can regain its antioxidant activity and return to its reduced form. Glutathione’s ability to continually regenerate itself is the reason why it is considered the most powerful antioxidant in the human body. The molecule's biological functions support its clinical utility in several situations, foremost among them its ability to protect the liver against the action of toxic substances.

In the past, the oral intake of glutathione was the limiting factor for its use in food supplements, as the human gut contains significant amounts of the enzyme gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase, which is responsible for the degradation of glutathione after oral ingestion. Consequently, the molecule was only truly effective when injected. Thanks to the special absorption route of Setria® GLR Orosoluble Sticks, a next-generation reduced glutathione supplement in a handy orosoluble stick form, it is possible to bypass the enzymatic steps responsible for the molecule's loss of effectiveness and ensure the body optimal bioavailability of glutathione.

Why is the effect of Glutathione so important?

Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, free radicals are busy attacking our bodies at cell level. Scientists have discovered that this constant onslaught has detrimental effects on health and well-being in general, including the health and ageing of our tissues. Fighting the damage caused by free radicals seems to enable us to age better and live healthier lives, which is why it is important to ensure our bodies optimal levels of glutathione, a molecule capable of effectively counteracting oxidative stress.

How can Setria® GLR Orosoluble Sticks help the body to fight free radicals?

Eating, exercising and even breathing are actions that can result in the formation of free radicals. Once formed, these molecules attack the body at cell level, stealing electrons from other molecules and triggering a chain reaction. GLR Sticks provides the body with reduced Glutathione, which binds to and neutralises free radicals.

Why is glutathione known as the 'Master antioxidant' or the 'King of antioxidants'?

Glutathione not only neutralises free radicals, it is also capable of reactivating other antioxidant molecules, like vitamins C and E. Normally, once antioxidants (e.g. vitamin C and vitamin E) have done their job by inactivating free radicals, they become unstable radicals themselves. Glutathione helps to recycle these molecules, restoring their function and extending their ability to attack free radicals, which is why Glutathione is considered the 'master' or 'King' molecule of all the body’s antioxidants.

How does Setria® GLR Orosoluble Sticks help eliminate toxins?

Glutathione supports the function of the liver, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract and intestines, the body's major detoxification pathways.

It acts on two different fronts:

  1. It helps eliminate toxins, ingested chemicals and potential carcinogens that the body has already absorbed;

  2. It intercepts and neutralises toxins in the gastrointestinal tract before they are absorbed.

Why can Setria® GLR Orosoluble Stick also be useful for athletes?

Scientific research seems to suggest that Setria® glutathione can support Nitric Oxide (NO) production when combined with L-Citrulline and when used in endurance performance.

**Setria® also appears to help maintain high levels of NO, which may reduce fatigue and accelerate recovery.

Sublingual Setria® GLR can therefore aid strength training by maintaining increased nitric oxide production after a training session.

Our Advice

We recommend taking Setria® GLR Orosoluble Sticks as part of your morning routine. It is important to take Glutathione after the recovery processes that normally take place in the body during the night, because endogenous Glutathione levels are naturally lower in the morning as soon as we wake up. We do not recommend taking Setria® GLR Orosoluble Sticks immediately after working out, because at this stage, although free radical production is high, the body undergoes physiological adaptations that must not be disrupted. It is always best to take antioxidant molecules some time before or after a workout.

Frequently asked questions

What role does glutathione play in liver detoxification?

Glutathione plays a key role in liver detoxification, because it is involved in numerous processes that rid the body of toxic substances. The liver is the main organ involved in detoxifying the body of chemicals and drugs: these compounds are metabolised through a series of enzymatic reactions that make them more water-soluble and therefore easily eliminated through urine or faeces.

Glutathione is an essential cofactor for two important enzymes involved in this detoxification process: glutathione S-transferase (GST) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). GST is involved in the conjugation of toxic substances with glutathione, which increases their solubility and promotes their elimination from the body. GPx, on the other hand, is an antioxidant enzyme that uses glutathione to neutralise free radicals and other oxidising agents that can damage liver cells. In addition, glutathione plays an important role in governing the liver's redox balance, thereby protecting liver cells from oxidative damage caused by the reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced during the detoxification process. These ROS can damage DNA, proteins and cell lipids and cause inflammation and cellular damage.

How can Glutathione help prevent cellular ageing?

Glutathione can help prevent cellular ageing through its antioxidant action and its ability to protect cells from the damage caused by free radicals. It is also involved in numerous cell processes that help to prevent cellular ageing, such as regulating the cell cycle, protecting DNA from mutations and promoting the repair of damaged DNA. Nevertheless, the level of glutathione in the body tends to decrease with age, consequently making the cells more prone to oxidative damage and contributing to cellular ageing. Maintaining an adequate level of glutathione in the body is therefore important for preventing or slowing cellular ageing.

What are the consequences of a glutathione deficiency in the body?

A glutathione deficiency can have several negative consequences for the body's health and well-being, because it impairs immune system function, increases oxidative stress, causes liver damage, reduces the capacity to repair DNA and increases sensitivity to drugs and toxic substances. Therefore, maintaining an adequate level of glutathione in the body through a balanced diet, regular exercise and intake of food supplements, if necessary, can help prevent or reduce the risk of these negative consequences.
