Vitamin C Chewable is Yamamoto® Research's product based on 500mg of patented PureWay-C® vitamin C, containing lipid metabolites and bioflavonoids from citrus fruits for improved absorption and release, in chewable form. Bioflavonoids are added to the formula to enhance vitamin C absorption.

The innovative PUREWAY-C® patent chosen for Vitamin C Complex is composed of 100% naturally-derived vitamin C combined with bioflavonoids and vegetable fatty acids, extracted from citrus fruits, combined to allow exceptional molecule stability, maximum intestinal absorption and optimal vascular distribution. Thanks to the presence of molecules capable of acting as cofactors, the result is a vitamin C even more effective and well-tolerated in the gastrointestinal tract.

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is one of the most important water-soluble vitamins for the body and must be taken regularly with food. This vitamin is valuable for its many functions, first and foremost its antioxidant action that enables the body to counteract oxidative stress, free radicals and cellular ageing. It is also involved in several physiological mechanisms:

  • Participates as a cofactor in the formation reaction of collagen, a very important protein in the structure of skin, bones, ligaments, muscles and vascular tissue;

  • It has a key function in supporting the immune system and the body's natural defences (it aids the differentiation, maturation and functioning of lymphocytes and protects monocytes and neutrophils from free radical damage);

  • It allows the intestinal absorption of ‘non-heme’ iron (that contained in plant-based foods) and intervenes in the synthesis of red blood cells, responsible for the correct oxygenation of the body;

  • It is able to reduce the toxicity of certain metals and inhibit the synthesis of carcinogenic compounds (such as nitrosamines).

Thanks to its properties, vitamin C is particularly useful for maintaining skin health, slowing skin ageing and protecting us from UV damage, as well as preventing and counteracting the onset of seasonal illnesses and infections.

PureWay-C® as a quality patent

For Chewable Vitamin C, the Yamamoto® Nutrition R&D team chose to use the patented PureWay-C®, currently the only source of vitamin C made from a fatty acid formulation, scientifically studied to optimise the absorption and retention of this vitamin in the body. The inclusion of naturally-derived lipid metabolites and citrus bioflavonoids in the formula improves both the absorption and release kinetics of ascorbic acid: the lipid metabolites are mixed with vitamin C during its production process and are obtained from safe plant sources.

As schematised in the image above, in this particular form of vitamin C, fatty acids act as carriers of ascorbic acid to increase its intestinal absorption and cellular uptake kinetics, allowing vitamin C safe, rapid and effective entry into cells. Natural bioflavonoids obtained from citrus fruits also protect vitamin C from the action of oxidising molecules, as well as helping to increase the antioxidant capacity of Chewable Vitamin C.

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Miami School of Medicine found that the average serum vitamin C level was higher in the group taking PureWay-C® for a period of 24 hours after intake.

The study was conducted on healthy volunteers who followed a vitamin C diet for a fortnight and then received a single supplement of 1,000 mg of vitamin C, taking PureWay-C® or one of the other forms of vitamin C. Researchers at the University of Miami School of Medicine determined that levels of C-reactive protein (a marker of systemic inflammation in the body) and oxidised low-density lipoprotein (LDL, the ‘bad cholesterol’) decreased when healthy volunteers took PureWay-C®. The researchers found that 24 hours after taking PureWay-C®, the serum level of C-reactive protein decreased by 15.6 per cent and oxidised LDL by 8.4 per cent. Oxidised LDL is associated with an increased cardiovascular risk.

As shown in the figure below, researchers at Adelphi University found that in ex vivo studies, the PureWay-C® form of vitamin C is able to stimulate neurite outgrowth, improve fibroblast adhesion during wound healing, and protect the immune system from inflammation. Research also indicates that the PureWay-C® form of vitamin C offers effective antioxidant (+12%) and free radical scavenging (+11%) activity: the quantification was carried out using the ORAC (ORAC, i.e. Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) and (DPPH) methods.

In addition, PureWay-C® is GRAS-certified (‘Generally Recognised As Safe’): its intake is not associated with any of the adverse effects that can occur with the intake of high doses of vitamin C. In the studies with PureWay-C® vitamin C, no side effects or stomach upset were observed.Reduction of tiredness and fatigue Growth of maternal tissue in pregnancy

Our Advice

There is no specific time of day when it is best to take chewable Vitamin C, because this micronutrient can be absorbed by the body effectively at any time. It is in fact a water-soluble vitamin, i.e. it dissolves in water. However, there are some cautions that can be taken to maximise the absorption and utilisation of vitamin C: some experts suggest taking vitamin C with a meal or immediately after a meal, as this can help increase the assimilation of the nutrient. Remember that Vitamin C Chewable is a formulation that can be chewed without diminishing its effectiveness, and has a pleasant citrus flavour.
